Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has released a new open-source AI model called R1 that can mimic human reasoning, rivalling or outperforming leading US developers on industry benchmarks. The release of R1 has sent shockwaves through the US tech industry, with companies like OpenAI and Meta analyzing how DeepSeek built its model and whether it did so as cheaply as claimed, and lawmakers trying to figure out how to compete with China's progress on AI. The fallout from R1's release has led to a reevaluation of the economics of building AI, with some arguing that the focus should shift from spending heavily on advanced chips and data centers to developing more efficient techniques, and others questioning the rationale for stratospheric AI budgets.
