Bosnia sits closer to Vienna than Vienna sits to Rome, yet Europe keeps
filing it somewhere else. People have lived on this land without a single
break for more than a hundred thousand years. It has its own primeval
forest, one of only two left on the continent. It has around a thousand
brown bears, four hundred wolves, and a blind cave salamander that lives
for a century in total darkness. It has sixty thousand medieval tombstones
standing in open fields, carved for Catholic, Orthodox, and Bosnian Church
dead alike, side by side, under the same symbols. And in the old heart of
Sarajevo there is a line set into the pavement where the Ottoman street
becomes a Viennese one in a single step.
