Can We Save This CRACKED Final Drive Spindle Off a CAT 793 Mining Truck!?

Video

Video Description

Can we salvage this cracked spindle off a 300 tonne mining truck? We’re about to find out… 🔍 This final drive spindle came off a Caterpillar 793, one of the biggest haul trucks in mining. These things carry hundreds of tonnes, so every component takes a serious beating, especially the final drives. The customer found three small cracks and sent it in to see if it could be saved. We start by sand blasting off the old paint and get the surface prepped. Then we go over it with our Magnaflux magnetic particle tester and magnetic ink to check the entire diameter. And that’s when we find it, something worse, a bigger crack on the other side of the spindle that wasn’t first spotted. It’s sitting right on the limit of the salvageable tolerance, but the customer gives us the go-ahead to try and save it. We start grinding with a 5" disc to chase the crack, switching to a policurve disc and then a die grinder tool to keep removing material until we think we’ve got it. But just to be sure, we crack test it again with the magnaflux. What we find next even surprised us…
