Denver had no harbor, no navigable river, no timber, and fifteen inches of rain a year. The gold that drew people there in 1858 turned out to be mostly a hoax. The transcontinental railroad bypassed it for Cheyenne. The silver crash of 1893 wiped out its banks, its fortunes, and the men who built its grand hotels and opera houses. By every rule of American economic history, Denver should have become a ghost town. Instead, a handful of people — William Larimer, John Evans, David Moffat, Horace Tabor, Henry Brown — kept making bets that defied rational calculation: building their own railroad when the Union Pacific wrote them off, pouring millions into hotels and opera houses on the open plains, and tunneling six miles through the Continental Divide to get water from the other side of the Rocky Mountains. The story runs from the Pike's Peak Gold Rush through the rise of Leadville silver, the construction of the Tabor Grand Opera House and the Brown Palace Hotel, the devastating Panic of 1893, Tabor's fall from mining millionaire to three-dollar-a-day laborer, and Moffat's fourteen-million-dollar obsession with a mountain tunnel he never lived to see completed. The Brown Palace opened on August 12, 1892. It has never closed for a single day since.
