I Bought the Most Hated Truck in California…

Turns out if you want to buy one of the coolest tow trucks ever built, all you have to do is hop on a plane to Los Angeles, survive what may have been the sketchiest Uber ride in recorded history, and show up at Pepe’s yard with questionable decision-making skills.

Waiting for me was the most unique truck in their entire fleet… and one that was living on borrowed time. Thanks to the California Air Resources Board, this pre-emissions truck was destined to be cut up for scrap instead of doing what it was built to do. That wasn’t about to happen if I had anything to say about it.

So naturally, I bought it.

Now came the easy part… driving an old, unfamiliar truck 850 miles home across California and Oregon with absolutely no idea what surprises were waiting around the next corner. Because if there’s one thing I excel at, it’s turning simple purchases into cross-state adventures.

Will it make it home under its own power, or will I end up needing a tow truck for my newly purchased tow truck?

We Bought a $1,000 Abandoned CAT 400 Haul Truck

We picked up a $1,000 bargain. CAT 400 series 40-ton haul truck that had been sitting dead in the woods for 7-8 years. No reverse, no front-wheel drive, one flat tire, and a whole lot of question marks. This video follows the entire recovery: hiking in to find it, airing up tires, sourcing batteries, chasing down a transmission oil pressure issue, and finally getting it running and driven back to the shop.

Turns out this thing is a bit of an oddball — built by DJB in England in 1985, wearing CAT part numbers, running a mechanical 3406 Caterpillar. We also got Grandpa's old Komatsu excavator loaded up and back to the shop in the process.

You’ve probably thought about it before — having your own excavator!
Well, I sure did earlier this summer while browsing Alibaba.com. I found a lot of to- good- to- be – true- offers. Before long, I had sent out several inquiries to manufacturers in China — and just minutes later, the order was placed. It was not nearly as cheap as advertised, but for about 12 000 dollars, I now own my own mini excavator, with a lot of attachments.

About five weeks after order, I received photos of my Vote VTW 1.2t mini excavator, built completely to my own specifications:

Enclosed cab
– Kubota 3-cylinder diesel engine
– Expandable tracks
– Hydraulic thumb
– Pilot controls
– Adjustable blade
– Cab
– LED lights
– Hydraulic coupler
– Sving boom
…and more!

I also ordered a bunch of attachments — different digging and grading buckets, pallet forks, a hydraulic auger, and more.

After about 2.5 months in total, the Vote VTW 1.2t finally arrived at my address here in Norway.

In this video, you’ll see the arrival, unboxing, and first project: repairing my driveway, which had been badly damaged after heavy rainfall.
